Lucinda Loveland opened the front door of her tiny, rundown shack and frowned. Pulling her robe tighter around her, I couldn’t help but think she looked like a younger version of Queen Atla.

“Can I help you?” She pushed her blonde curls off her face and leaned a hip against the doorjamb. “If you’re looking for the previous renter, I don’t know where they moved.”

“You just moved here?” I asked.

Lucinda frowned. “About two months ago.” She looked back over her shoulder inside the darkened room. “Look, now isn’t a good time if you’re selling something. Sorry.”

She went to close the door, but Zane’s hand prevented it from closing. “My name is Zane, and this is Kara. We’d just like a moment of your time.”

“Yeah? Well, too bad. Now, remove your hand before I give you a blast of magic.”

“What’s going on out there?” a male voice called from deep inside the shack.

“Nothing I can’t handle,” Lucinda said.

A few seconds later, an attractive man with piercing green eyes and dark hair threaded with silver appeared in the doorway.

“Prince Patrick,” Zane said.

I heard the surprise in Zane’s voice, and I studied the man closer.

“Prince?” I mused. “Is he Queen Atla’s…son?”

Lucinda’s high-pitched laugh made me wince. “Oh, that’s rich. She thinks Queen Control is your mother!”

“That’s enough, Lucinda,” the man said quietly. “What can I do for you, Zane?”

“We need a moment of your time. Both of you.”

Nodding once, Prince Patrick stepped back, then guided Lucinda away from us.

“What’s going on?” I hissed, putting my hand on Zane’s arm to keep him from entering.

“Prince Patrick is the queen’s consort. That means he’s her husband—or in this case, I guess ex-husband.”

I gave my forehead a light tap. “I should have known. It’s the same in the human world.”

We stepped inside the rundown home and stepped directly into the living room.

“We don’t entertain much,” Prince Patrick said, gesturing for us to sit on the couch while he and Lucinda shared a chair. “But I’m sure we can offer you coffee or tea.”

“No, thanks.” Zane sat down on the couch. “We’re good.”

I sat next to Zane and glanced around the dingy room. How had this man gone from a castle to this? And why? For the love of this younger woman?

“I can tell you’re shocked to see me,” Patrick said. “Yet you are here to speak to both of us. Does this have to do with the attempt on my daughter’s life? Did Queen Atla send you?”

“Of course she did,” Lucinda snapped, tossing her curls over her shoulder. “I’m sure she immediately pointed the finger at you, your highness. She’s vindictive that way.”

I couldn’t help but think if anyone was going to hurt Princess Natasha, it would be Lucinda and not Natasha’s own father.

“Now, Lucinda,” Patrick said softly, “let’s not jump to conclusions. And Queen Atla has every right to give out my name as a possible suspect. We are in the middle of a divorce.”

Zane held up his hand. “Let me stop you both right there.
